Is art an antidote to politics?

Looking at Art:

David Brooks wrote an article in the New York Times about how he escapes the political turmoil of our times by going to a museum. He believes that: “The arts work on us at that deep level, the level that really matters.” He can get “so exuberantly swept up in some piece of music that you feel primeval passions thumping within you; encountering a painting so beautiful it feels like you’ve walked right into its alternative world.” I can appreciate this thinking, because one of my favorite activities is getting lost in a museum. Have you been to a museum lately, or seen an original work of art you love?

Work in the Studio:

Delighted to be back making sculpture, I completed the piece you see here very recently. I was trying out a new ceramic clay and looking for new color treatments for the surface of the piece. The dialog I have with a piece of art does take me to an alternative world and I am forever grateful for the escape.

Betty Gerich, Artist, Painter and Sculptor

My studio work consists of sculpture inspired by the figure, paintings of people and drawings from a live model. Three college degrees trained me as an artist and a teacher. My background includes eleven solo exhibitions and my art has received numerous awards. Connecting with other artists and sharing ideas about the work is an ongoing passion.
