Looking at Art:

The cartoonist, Sarah Anderson wrote an opinion article in the New York Times which ended with, “I see a monster forming.” I found her story interesting because she creates light hearted cartoons about people and animals. however, after posting them on the web and accumulating a following, Alt-right individuals started appropriating her cartoons and reposting violent images using her work. Later she recognized her art manipulated by A.I. and in each case she felt violated. I know that A.I. can be used very creatively, but the potential for appropriation now has grown astronomically, offering opportunities for both good and reprehensible use. Is appropriation on this scale a step too far?

Work in the Studio:

One of my most recent sculptures presented a creative challenge for me. I asked myself if the recent work was too similar. Was I stuck, closing the opportunity for further growth in my sculptural work? I often start with an idea and working from the bottom up, I cut a shape out of clay to form the base. The original idea may completely disappear as I work, because the piece demands certain changes as it grows toward completion. Although the pieces are similar, because of this working method, they are different from each other in form. By the time I completed the work, I started asking myself how I might make my watercolors as spontaneous as the sculptures. It’s funny how the mental practice, ideas about the work, can surprise me. Do you experience anything like this?
